What’s So Great About LTE on Apple Watch

I finally got my hands on Apple Watch Series 3 with cellular about 2 weeks ago. I’m currently using it with T-Mobile which includes 3 months of free service. I’m not 100% sure if I’ll keep the plan but we’ll see.

If you didn’t know, I like to workout. Typically I’m at the gym 3-4 times a week and when there’s nice weather, I’m running outside. This is the main reason I wanted a watch with LTE. I no longer bring my phone to the gym which is a huge plus and it’s not just having to carry a phone around in your pocket. Between whatever I was doing at the gym, I would always check email, Tweetbot or whatever distracting app. Now it’s workout and go home.

Apple Music over LTE has been incredible. Having your entire library and access to everything else via Siri is a game changer. I’ll say this if Apple did not offer this at launch it would have been a huge disappointment. It’s one of the main reasons to have LTE on your Apple Watch.

As far as apps go, phone calls and iMessage work just fine. I’ve taken a few calls using AirPods and haven’t heard any complaints. Some apps do support an LTE connection but some don’t and as far as I know, there’s no way to tell. I assume updates will come in the future but for now, you just have to try and see what happens when you open an app.

Besides LTE, speed is a huge improvement over my original Apple Watch. I didn’t realize how many features I stopped using because my old watch was so slow. Also, from my experience, Apple Watch Series 3 has the best Siri experience of any Apple devices which is really odd. No idea why that would be.

For most people LTE is not worth it but you’ll know if you need it. For the few occasions where I can leave my iPhone behind, it’s totally worth having an LTE equipped Apple Watch.
